Mooresville First UMC has a new “home room” for the SHINE program, and an educator on staff to run our inclusion program from 9:15 to 12:15 every Sunday morning! The home room is a safe place for children/youth/adults with disabilities to go for a few minutes when extra support is needed or for the whole time of Sunday school and/or worship if needed. It includes sensory items, simple curriculum/lessons, and availability of music, DVDs and toys under the supervision of a special education professional and other adult.
The SHINE committee is also developing a program to provide “buddies” for friends who need extra support while attending worship and/or Sunday school. Buddies will be available whenever we have volunteers willing and trained. The SHINE home room is up and running for church members with disabilities in September, and will open to anyone in the community October 6. If you’d like more information, are interested in participating in SHINE, or are interested in volunteering as a buddy, please email shine@mooresvillefumc.org.
